Distinguished Alumni
The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor that Penn State bestows upon an outstanding alumnus/a. It is sponsored by and administered through the Office of the Board of Trustees. Proposed by President Milton S. Eisenhower and established by the Board of Trustees in 1951, the award salutes the achievements of outstanding alumni whose "personal lives, professional achievements, and community service exemplify the objectives of their Alma Mater."
In
2001, Shirley Mahaley Malcom, '74g of the Intercollege Graduate Degree Program
in Ecology, was recognized as a Distinguished Alumna of Penn State and the
Graduate School. Dr. Malcom was cited for "a truly remarkable career that
has helped bring public access to and understanding of science to a new
level while elevating the status of women." [Full
