"Tomorrow's Professors are Today's Graduate Scholars"

Drs. Green and Moore will address the importance of graduate school in preparing graduate students to become faculty members. These distinguished scholars represent respectively the Sisters of the Academy (SOTA) and the Brothers of the Academy (BOTA). These two organizations have the objectives of nurturing productive collaborative scholarship, particularly toward the desired end of promotion and tenure among the members in tenure track positions, and fostering collegial networks and relationships among the members.

Biographical Sketch

James L. Moore III is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of South Carolina. He received his B.A. in English Education from Delaware State University and earned both his M.A.Ed. and Ph.D. in Counselor Education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech).

Currently, he is serving on the Miles To Go Task Force for the State of South Carolina (sponsored by the Southern Education Foundation), which is based on the State of Maryland's Miles To Go Initiative. The purpose of this task force is to identify data that illustrate the status of African American students (K-16) in South Carolina and to provide recommendations that will improve student achievement. He also has served on a variety of other statewide committees that were convened to improve access and success for its African American students.

Dr. Moore has published numerous publications on counseling African Americans (particularly males), academic persistence and achievement, and counseling student-athletes. In addition to his scholarly activities, Dr. Moore has begun to chart a national and international research agenda. For example, he was recently appointed co-editor for a special issue of The Journal of Men's Studies, scheduled for publication winter, 2003. The theme of this special issue is "Black Men: Issues and Challenges in the Academy." Another illustration of his commitment to scholarship from an international perspective is reflected in his recent trip (summer 2001) to India. He attended the International Association for Counseling Conference and co-presented the following paper, "Intercultural Marriage and Intimacy: Beyond the Continental Divide," which is scheduled to be published in a forthcoming issue in the International Journal for the Advancement of Counselling.

Over the years, Dr. Moore has actively involved himself with a variety of scholarly and community projects and has received many accolades and citations for his efforts. For example, he has a biography listed in Outstanding Young Men in America (1998 edition) and is a member of numerous professional and honor societies, including Alpha Kappa Mu, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, and Chi Sigma Iota. The Delaware Association of Teachers of English recognized him for his exceptional contribution to English Education with its Outstanding Achievement in English/Language Arts Award (1995).

During his undergraduate studies at Delaware State University, he was a full scholarship football player for five years and was team captain during his last year of eligibility (1994). He was also the recipient for Delaware State University's Class of 1995 Outstanding Service Award. From 1996 to 1997, he served as the President of the Black Graduate Student Organization of Virginia Tech, a membership of over 200 members.
