2005 Achievement Conference
University Park -- 2005 Achievement Conference
Dr. Alexa Canady, the first African American female neurosurgeon in the United States, will deliver the keynote address at the 2005 Acheivement Conference on Saturday, February 5. The conference titled, "Raising the Bar to Boundless Potential Through Leadership and Unity," will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nittany Lion Inn.
Dr. Alexa Canady became a neurosurgeon in 1977 at the age of 26. Raised in a family of intellectuals who valued education highly, she drew inspiration from her grandmother, who became a school teacher at the age of 16, and her mother, who completed college at the age of 19. Dr. Canady's appointments include the Peter Scotanus Professor of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Wayne State University, Chief of Neurosurgery Children's Hospital of Michigan, and Chairman of the Neurological Devices Panel of the Food and Drug Administration.*
The Achievement Conference serves as a venue for sharing academic achievements, promoting professional and academic development, and encouraging networking among faculty, staff, students, and administrators. It is presented by the Black Graduate Student Association and is co-sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for Educational Equity, the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and International Programs, the Office of Graduate Educational Equity Programs, the Forum on Black Affairs, and the Commission on Racial Ethnic Diversity.
