University Park, PA -- Sr. VP for Research Visits China as part of the 2007 WUN Annual Global Meeting

Alumni Association Reception in Beijing hosted by President Graham Spanier and Dean Eva J. PellSenior Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School Eva J. Pell recently visited China, along with President Graham Spanier, for the 2007 Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) Annual Global Meeting held in Beijing. The WUN is a partnership of research-led universities from Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. Its alliance exists to make significant advances in knowledge and understanding in areas of current global concern.

On Wednesday, May 23, Drs. Spanier and Pell attended the forum “Realizing the Global University: Developing Effective International Strategies in a Rapidly Changing World," at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, which was hosted by Zhejiang President, Professor Yang Wei. On Thursday, May 24, Dr. Pell also attended the WUN Global Academic Development Board meeting in Beijing, hosted by Leeds University.

In addition to the meetings, Dr. Pell participated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the China Agricultural University in Beijing on Friday, May 25, that coincided with a visit by Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences. The MOU is designed to support the development of joint research in the area of food safety and dairy product development – currently, two important issues in China. That evening, Drs. Spanier and Pell hosted a Penn State Alumni Association reception in Shangri-La Kerry Centre Hotel, which, along with alumni, was attended by 25 students who will be coming to Penn State in the fall.

On Saturday, May 26, Drs. Spanier and Pell were provided an informal tour of Tsinghua University in Beijing, a major engineering university in China, and on Monday, May 28, they were given a tour of Peking University’s College of Life Sciences research facilities.

Also coinciding with Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences visit, they participated in a signing ceremony on Tuesday, May 29, renewing a Memorandum of Understanding with South China Agricultural University in Guangzhou and visited the University’s College of Food Sciences, College of Life Sciences and the Root Biology Center.
